Addressing the Unique Needs of Youth in the Juvenile Justice System
Many youth struggle with under-developed and/or poor social and moral reasoning skills, or may have substance abuse, sexual abuse and violence issues. Through OCFS’s Division for Juvenile Justice and Opportunities for Youth (DJJOY), PDP has developed a statewide curriculum to enhance the knowledge, attitude and skills of counselors and aids working with young people at risk who are placed in DJJOY facilities. The strategies and skills taught help improve many program outcomes, while reducing recidivism and increasing public safety.
PDP has worked closely with DJJOY, the Bureau of Training and the Bureau of Counseling Services to develop and design training curricula using evidence-based practices that address the needs of DJJOY facilities and aids in the delivery of crucial services to the youth and families they serve.
