Core Essentials Skills Training For Experienced Caseworkers

Delivering More Effective Foster Care Services

To achieve consistent outcomes, caseworkers must have a common set of interpersonal, assessment and decision-making skills. PDP staff deliver regionally “Core Essentials,” an outcome-based training initiative that provides child welfare and child protective services staff with the knowledge, skills and abilities they need to achieve the goals of:

  • child safety
  • family preservation
  • youth self-sufficiency in independent living
  • adoption and developmental progress for children in the care of OCFS

PDP is one of three University-based training partners who deliver this training. The three partners are PDP, SUC Buffalo and SUNY Stony Brook. PDP's training in the Office of Children and Family Services' Regions III, IV and V consists of:
  • an 8-day training divided into 2 alternating weeks
  • pre-training readings
  • classroom skill development
  • pre and post-training conferences with participants
  • on the job training activities
