Medication Administration for Children
In 2005, the New York State Office of Children and Family Services (OCFS)created specific regulations for registered and licensed child day care providers who choose to give medication to children in their programs. The regulations require all child day care programs that administer medication, other than over-the-counter topical ointments, sunscreen and topically applied insect repellent, to meet certain conditions, including having staff who are approved to do so.
PDP fulfills this important requirement with the OCFS-approved Medication Administration Training (MAT) course, conducted by Registered Nurses (RNs) at PDP and offered to qualified health care professionals wanting to become certified MAT trainers in New York State. The OCFS MAT certified trainers offer the MAT course to eligible OCFS child day care providers.
PDP continues to monitor active and approved MAT trainers throughout the year. Participants may be eligible to receive funding from the Medication Administration Training Rebate Program, with funds provided by the Child Care and Development Fund.
